🌿 When the Universe Awakens and Falls Asleep
Viṣṇu’s Cosmic Breath and the Soul’s Eternal Destiny
Reflections from the online satsang with Gauranga Sundara Prabhu – Bhagavad Gita 8.18

During the online satsang of June 24th, 2026, based on Bhagavad Gita 8.18, Gauranga Sundara Prabhu guided us through one of the most fascinating subjects of the entire eighth chapter: the creation and dissolution of the material universe.
At first glance, this appears to be a discussion about cosmology, time, and the structure of creation.
But, as is often the case in the Bhagavad Gita, behind the immense scale of the cosmos lies a deeply personal question:
What is the true destiny of the soul?
📖 Bhagavad Gita 8.18
The verse states:
“At the beginning of Brahma’s day, all manifested beings come forth from the unmanifest state, and when Brahma’s night falls, they are once again dissolved into the unmanifest.”
At first this may seem like a purely cosmological description.
In reality, Krishna is inviting us to adopt an entirely different perspective on existence.
The universe is not static.
It continually unfolds…
and continually withdraws.
Like the breathing of a living being.
🌅 Brahma’s Day and Night
Maharaja continued the theme developed in the previous weeks.
We have already learned that one day of Brahma lasts billions of Earth years.
Now we discover that during that cosmic “day,” the entire material creation becomes manifest.
Countless living beings appear.
Planetary systems, civilizations, stars, and worlds unfold into existence.
Then, when Brahma’s night arrives, everything returns to the unmanifest state.
This does not mean that the soul ceases to exist.
It simply means that the material stage temporarily closes its curtain.
When the next cosmic dawn arrives…
the play begins again.
🌊 The Universe Breathes
One of the most beautiful images presented during the lecture is that It is Lord Viṣṇu who breathes: the universe manifests and is withdrawn in harmony with His cosmic breath.
Inhalation.
Exhalation.
Manifestation.
Dissolution.
Creation.
Withdrawal.
Many people think of creation as a single historical event.
The Vedic understanding is very different.
The universe is dynamic.
It is cyclical.
It continually appears and disappears.
But this rhythm belongs only to the material world.
The spiritual world never enters this cycle.
🕊️ The Soul Is Meant to Be Active
One of the deepest points of the lecture concerns the very nature of the soul.
Maharaja emphasized a fundamental principle:
the soul is active by nature.
We naturally long to:
- love
- create
- serve
- learn
- share
- develop relationships
Because this is our original spiritual identity.
For this reason Maharaja also addressed an important philosophical question.
Some spiritual traditions describe liberation as merging into the impersonal Brahman.
The Bhakti tradition offers a different vision.
The soul does not simply seek the end of suffering.
The soul longs to love.
It longs to serve.
It longs to enjoy an eternal relationship with Krishna.
🌸 Does Happiness Depend on Conditions?
Maharaja offered a very practical reflection.
How often do we think:
“I would be happy if…”
- I had more money.
- I had a better home.
- The weather were cooler.
- My health improved.
- My job changed.
- Other people behaved differently.
Material happiness almost always depends on a long list of external conditions.
And the moment one of those conditions changes…
our happiness begins to disappear.
Spiritual happiness is fundamentally different.
It does not arise from external circumstances.
It arises from our relationship with Krishna.
That is why it can remain even during life’s greatest challenges.
🔄 Why Are We Called Conditioned Souls?
During the lecture Maharaja also explained why we are known as:
conditioned souls.
Not because our true nature is flawed.
But because our consciousness is temporarily covered.
Like the sun hidden behind clouds.
The clouds do not change the sun.
Likewise, the soul remains eternal, pure, and spiritual.
It is our material consciousness that prevents us from fully realizing our true identity.
🌍 Everything Returns… But Nothing Is Lost
An obvious question naturally arises.
If everything is withdrawn during Brahma’s night…
what happens to all living beings?
Maharaja explained that souls are never destroyed.
They remain in an unmanifest state, carrying their karma and their desires.
When the next cycle of creation begins…
their journey continues.
This is why the real problem is not simply death.
The real problem is repeated return.
Birth.
Death.
Another birth.
Another death.
Again.
And again.
🌺 Only the Spiritual World Never Falls Asleep
Here we arrive at the central message of the lecture.
Everything within the material world:
- is born
- grows
- changes
- declines
- disappears
Even universes.
Even Brahma.
Even cosmic time itself.
Yet there exists an entirely different reality.
The spiritual world.
There we find no:
- creation
- destruction
- fear
- death
- separation
Everything there is eternal.
Because everything is founded upon an eternal relationship with Krishna.
✨ A Personal Reflection
While listening to this lecture, one image came repeatedly to my mind.
Every evening our world falls asleep.
We close our eyes.
We dream.
The following morning we awaken and continue our daily activities.
Bhagavad Gita seems to tell us that something similar happens to the entire universe.
But there is one profound difference.
We are not the dream.
We are not the stage.
We are not even the curtain that opens and closes.
We are eternal souls temporarily passing through the theater of the material world.
And that is what makes Bhakti so extraordinary.
It does not simply explain how the universe functions.
It shows us how to transcend it.
Because the greatest awakening is not the one that happens every morning.
It is the awakening that occurs when the soul remembers its eternal relationship with Krishna.
Then it no longer matters how many times the universe appears…
or disappears.
Our true home does not belong to the cycles of time.
It belongs to eternity.
