The Land, The Cows And Krishna
Modern Day Agriculture – a By-Product of War.
On April 19 a terrorist explosion destroyed the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City, taking the lives of 168 people, injuring hundreds more. Many people were surprised to learn that the deadly blast was caused not by some high-security military explosive but by ordinary agricultural fertilizer mixed with fuel oil. How could a peaceful substance like crop fertilizer be used for such an insane and deadly purpose?
But when I heard about the ingredients used, my mind flashed to a passage from An Agricultural Testament, written in 1940 by Sir Albert Howard, the grandfather of modern organic farming:
“The feature of the manuring of the West is the use of artificial manures. The factories engaged during the Great War in the fixation of atmospheric nitrogen for the manufacture of explosives had to find other markets. The use of nitrogenous fertilizers in agriculture increased, until today the majority of farmers and market gardeners base their manurial programme on the cheapest forms of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K) on the market. What may be conveniently described as the NPK mentality dominates farming alike in the experimental stations and the countryside. Vested interests, entrenched in time of national emergency, have gained a stranglehold”.
In other words, artificial nitrogen-based fertilizer is simply a by-product of the military technology of World War I. When the war ended, manufacturers had to find another market for nitrates, so they began to promote artificial fertilizer—with phenomenal success. Therefore when the federal office building was blown up a few months ago, the tragic fact is that the chemicals were only doing what they were originally designed to do—destroy things, and people.
Jesus Was A Vegetarian
According to the Bible the original diet in the Garden of Eden was a vegetarian one. Adam and Eve lived happily, healthily and abundantly on a diet rich in fresh vegetarian fare. However, with the coming of the flood and the ensuing ecological destruction, a concession was made ensuring mankind’s survival, and for the first time there was a departure from the original diet intended by God.
Today of course this departure, this concession, has been transformed into the world’s biggest industry, the wholesale slaughtering of billions and billions of defenceless animals. Super efficient factory farms raise Gods creatures as meat, and high tech slaughterhouses deliver the final product. In one slaughterhouse in America they slaughter over 30,000 animals aday. That’s 210,000 a week, 1 million a month, 12 million a year, all between four walls in just one slaughterhouse. The rivers of blood spoken of in the Bible take place every day, as thousands of such slaughterhouses churn out their products, and planet earth becomes a mass production line of death.

Tulsi
I had wanted a Tulasi for a long time because she is so auspicious. I received my first one from a devotee from India. I gave a donation for the temple and took her home. She left two days later. I was shocked and disappointed. A couple of weeks later I obtained two more, and in a few days they left. I was devastated. About a month later I heard they had only one baby Tulasi left so I went to get her. I thought this would be my last chance. I would never get another one again. I had no idea what to do. I did what they had said. Put her near a window and water her a little everyday. I got down in front of this Tulasi and prayed to her. I told her that I wanted her very much. I did not know what I should do. I asked her to please not leave me and please guide me in the correct way of taking care of her. I remember the next day, without thinking, I moved her to another window (in Michigan we cannot keep her outside all year). I watered her differently. She started growing. She had definitely guided me. And she had responded to my prayer. She grew to be very beautiful and I grew many, many more.
The very best time I had at the Temple in Detroit is when Giri Govardhana dasa, who takes care of the Tulasis there, let me help him. He showed me how to mix and change the soil, fertilize, bathe them and pick the manjaris. I also transplanted most of them, along with about 200 babies.
